After threats Taylor secures initial half measure from retailers

ENERGY minister Angus Taylor may have either mislaid or mis-wielded his big stick after reportedly failing to get the agreement he wanted with power retailers at yesterday’s meeting.

Taylor was after a promise of lower prices - a default price - and an end to the loyalty tax that sees longstanding customers often charged more than new customers on promotional deals or those who threaten to switch power providers.

The roundtable with Origin Energy, AGL Energy and Energy Australia apparently yielded the half measure of the big three agreeing to a standardised rate, but with no discussions of actual pricing given the legalities around collusion.

Further correspondence will follow, according to information from The Guardian, and that will decide how the Prime Minister's anointed ‘minister for getting prices down' proceeds.
