ENERGY and emissions reduction minister Angus Taylor appears to be bullish about the “essential” nature of coal-fired power despite the government’s latest energy statistics pointing out coal use has declined by 5%, being replaced by gas and renewables.

The government released the 2019 energy statistics this morning, showing gas use for electricity generation grew by 6%, while wind was up 19% and solar up 46%.
