US steps on the gas

IT wasn't that long ago that the United States was seen as being a likely major market for Australian liquefied natural gas exporters. But US domestic gas production has grown so rapidly in the past year that some observers are warning of a domestic gas glut and a few worried US LNG importers are now talking about LNG exports from the US.

How did this happen? US gas production peaked in 2001 at 58 billion cubic feet per day (21.17 trillion cubic feet per annum) and has been flat for several years, but it is up again - by 3% in 2006...
