New South Wales finally has its first commercial gas field.

An independent reserve study commissioned by Eastern Star Gas (ESG) has confirmed the presence of "commercially significant" gas reserves in permit PEL 238 in NSW, thereby giving that state its first commercial gas field. Until now, NSW was the only mainland State without an accredited proven gas reserve.

The company estimated "2P" (proved and probable) gas reserves in the Coonarah Gas Field to be in the range of 10.4-13.6 billion cubic feet or 8.7-11.3 petajoules. Eastern Star commissioned the study following the successful drilling of three appraisal wells and re-completion of the existing Coonarah-4 well. With reserves being confirmed as "sufficient", the company is confident of entering into sales contracts with energy consumers in the Narrabi region.
