Shell cooks Malaysian cracker

Malaysia's Shell Refining Co Bhd (SRC) has announced that it has been forced to temporarily shut down its residue catalytic cracker to "investigate and resolve a technical matter." It would not elaborate further but confirmed that it was arranging alternatives for its other products.

In a brief statement made to the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Shell said, "The catalytic cracker is expected to be back onstream in two weeks. The shutdown has put a temporary halt to Shell's propylene exports supplied to Shell Chemicals in Singapore." No other facts or production figures were forthcoming.

"Alternative supplies for SRC's other products are already being arranged," added the company in its statement although it did not elaborate further on how this would be done.
