Eastern Star moves to complete Bibblewindi wells

A WORKOVER rig has now arrived at the Bibblewindi coal seam methane production pilot in Gunnedah Basin permit PEL 238, according to operator Eastern Star Gas.

Having already completed remedial work at Bohena-7, the rig is currently carrying out similar work at Bohena-3.

Once the remedial work is completed, the rig will move to equip the nine Bibblewindi production wells with pumps for production testing, which is due to be finished by the end of next month.

Dewatering of the Bohena seam will occur before the wells are placed on natural gas production, which will be measured to obtain independent gas reserves certification next year.

After this, the joint venture, in which Eastern Star is operator with a 65% stake and Gastar Exploration has 35%, will look to negotiate gas sales contracts.

Late last month, Eastern Star finished fracture stimulating and permeability testing the 10 wells.

The company reiterated that the project was running on time and under budget.

The Bohena Project Area, covering 260 square kilometres in PEL 238, contains up to 3700 petajoules of gas-in-place in coal seams of the Late Permian Black Jack Formation and the Early Permian Maules Creek.

PEL 238 is believed to contain one of the largest onshore natural gas accumulations in Australia. Alone it totals 17,000PJ (17 trillion cubic feet) of gas-in-place in the two coal seams that are over 10m thick in each of two coal-bearing formations.
