Gorgon to be fly-in, fly-out operation

PROPONENTS of the $15 billion Gorgon liquefied natural gas project have reportedly said workers there will be housed in a camp and do one-month stints on the West Australian island.

The WA government this week cleared the way for approvals to be given to the project on Barrow Island – subject to strict environmental conditions.

These include the Gorgon joint venturers spending an additional $60 million protecting rare flat back turtles on the island and sinking greenhouse gases underground.

ABC News yesterday reported that leading partner in the JV, Chevron, said workers will be housed in a camp on the island.

The company said camp conditions, including whether or not workers will be allowed to drink alcohol, are yet to be finalized.

It also said workers will do one-month stints before leaving the island for a break.

The project is awaiting final federal approval, expected to be made during January, subject to it getting a final green light from the WA government.

Construction is expected to begin in 2008.
