Gas company ATCO will trial the production storage and use of renewable hydrogen at its Clean Energy Innovation Hub to power a commercial-scale microgrid, which will test the use of the gas in different settings and applications, like home appliances.

The project will use excess solar energy to split tap water into its composite parts oxygen, and hydrogen.

The project's total cost will be $3.3 million, and is designed to study whether it has potential to be generated, stored and used at a larger scale, or whether it could replace natural gas at a city-wide scale across a municipality.

The hydrogen will be blended into the natural gas pipeline.
