LNG plants responsible for cost rise

THE cost of building a liquefied natural gas plant has doubled over the past two years, according to ConocoPhillips new ventures opportunity manager Mark Nelson.

"This could be one reason why many LNG projects have not been able to reach final investment decisions in their development phase as LNG suppliers are seeing this cost growth," he told the SEAAOC conference in Darwin yesterday.

He also indicated that ConocoPhillips is still targeting first production from a second train at the company's Darwin LNG facility by around 2014-15 with gas from the Sunrise field and Caldita.

The Darwin LNG facility at Wickham Point currently produces 3.5 million tonnes of LNG per annum but has the land and the necessary approvals for an expansion to 10MMtpa.
