NT hopes to land $50bn whopper

THE Northern Territory could see a $50 billion boost to its economy if Inpex decides to pipe gas from the giant Ichthys field to Darwin for liquefaction.

NT hopes to land $50bn whopper

NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson told the SEAAOC Conference in Darwin yesterday the report from ACIL Tasman meant more jobs and opportunities for people in the NT.

"It would be a significant impact on the economic security of the Northern Territory. It would underpin the economy for decades to come," he added.

"We have a strong case - but there is a long way to go if we are to win this project from Western Australia."

ACIL Tasman's assessment forecasts that Ichthys would inject $50 billion into the Territory economy over 20 years, from the start of site work in 2010.

The company identifies benefits flowing through to small business in a range of industries including manufacturing, maintenance, transport, training, office equipment, and accommodation.

Federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson said later there was nothing wrong with competition between states but that he wanted a decision sooner rather than later.
