IN the years after Edwin Drake launched the US oil industry with a well drilled in Pennsylvania in 1859 the common view was that his discovery would be confined to the immediate vicinity – a view which Slugcatcher and everyone else with an interest in oil now knows to be nonsense.

The same can be said of the progressive spread of US oil exploration over the rest of the 19th century, such as: "there's no oil west of the Appalachians", followed by "there's no oil west of the
