Rio shuts NZ smelter over high power costs

RIO Tinto will close its New Zealand Tiwai Point aluminium smelter and has given power supplier Meridien Energy 14 months notice on the end of its electricity contract, angering other power retailers and sending a chill across the Pond as Australia wonders if it might be next given relatively high power prices.

Australia smelters could be next Jacques

It is powered by hydropower, and as a result of high costs and a 2019 loss of A$43.3 million will close in 2021. It also called the outlook for aluminium "challenging".
