US upstream methane emissions set to increase

US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has signalled his intentions to repeal methane emissions restrictions from upstream oil and gas production enforced by his predecessor president Obama.

The Environmental Protection Agency has created a plan that, when implemented will relax laws requiring upstream oil and gas operators to measure, source and plug methane well leaks at new and old wells.
 
The proposal will repeal requirements for equipment upgrades that lessen required inspections to identify methane leaks; no doubt pleasing industry bodies who have for decades stated that testing for emissions leaks were expensive and unfeasible. 
 
According to information obtained by The New York Times and Bloomberg, the EPA could table the proposal to roll back requirements this month.
