The well was drilled to a total depth of 2188 metres and logging tests confirmed that the primary Wagina Formation objective is water bearing.
The result was disappointing as the Wagina formation is not only a productive horizon in the onshore Perth Basin, it was that formation in the Cliff Head discoveries which sparked the offshore Perth Basin rush for acreage.
Apache Energy farmed into the Morangie well over the weekend, during the West Australian Basins Symposium.
Tests are stilll being conducted on the logs with some hydrocarbon fluorescence being observed.
Easing the pain for some of the partners (Origin, Voyager) will be the announcement that the onshore Jingemia well, while a fraction of the size of the Morangie structure, may yield a daily flow rate of 4000 bopd after initial tests were fully analysed.
The 26 barrel flow is believed to come from the initial eight minutes of testing, after which the operator Origin Energy said the test tool became plugged and stopped flow for the remaining three hour period.
