The construction of the pipeline and the development of the facilities in Papua New Guinea are estimated to be worth $6 billion and would create a substantial number of jobs and economic activity for both regions.
Queensland is also actively promoting the use of gas as an energy source through its Cleaner Energy Strategy and industrial growth along the Queensland Coast is opening up more opportunities for gas suppliers.
Currently the project is searching for several solid foundation customers before financial backing can be sealed. Key customers such as the Australian Magnesium Plant at Stawell and Comalco are yet to sign although around 80PJ a year has been ordered from TXU, CS Energy and MIM. The project needs orders of around 120PJ to be viable.
