LANDOWNERS in Papua New Guinea’s Hela province have set out to damage its ExxonMobil-operated gas project following ongoing disputes with the government.

Groups of protestors damaged a main access road, vandalised and set fire to earthmoving equipment and may have also blockaded the project's associated airfield.
 
The actions reportedly stem from delays in government payment of royalties from the A$19 billion PNG LNG project, which made its first shipments four years ago.
 
An ExxonMobil spokesperson told journalists that the company was investigating the damage, which targeted construction of the Angore pipeline.
 
"Host government security forces are in the area and also investigating," the spokesperson said.
