The government has squashed the idea of revisiting the gas tax conversation in the near future, despite an internal push set to oppose prime minister Anthony Albanese's views at the conference.

With renewed hostilities between Iran and the US further highlighting Australia's reliance on international trading partners for liquid fuels, introducing a gas tax now would be detrimental.

Environment minister Murray Watt said the gas levy was not on the conference agenda given the worsening situation in the Middle East, which is already seeing petrol and diesel prices spike again.
