Azerbaijan: Situation in Georgia could affect pipeline

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister, Vilayat Guliyev, has warned that the worsening political situation between Georgia and its province of Adzharia could have a negative effect on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline project.

Despite the fact that the BTC does not pass through Adzharia and the minister did not elaborate any further on the matter, Guliyev said, "If stability in Adzharia and Georgia is infringed, and dangerous tendencies appear, then this could lead, to a certain extent, to complications in this large project."

Guliyev also feels that the decision by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to blockade the Black Sea port of Batumi had made the situation in Georgia "difficult". However, he was also confident that the Georgian government would find a solution.

"I'm sure that the economic and transport structures of both countries will carry out corresponding discussions and will search for an exit from this complicated situation," said Guliyev.
