THE New Zealand government has opened its draft Minerals and Petroleum Resource Strategy for consultation, which aims to transition its economy to a net-zero carbon one by 2050 while taking advantage of both the oil and gas, and the mining sector to do so.

In the case of the former it believes gas will be a useful transition fuel to back up renewables' increasing share and in the case of mining certain minerals such as cobalt will support more
