Kansai is the fourth of the NWSV’s original Japanese customerse to renew its long-term contract this year.

In an eight-year deal starting April 2009, the North West Shelf Venture will supply about 400,000 tonnes of LNG a year to Kansai on an ex-ship basis.

Kansai, which is Japan’s second largest power utility, signed a deal with Woodside in March this year for the uptake of between 1.75 and 2 million tonnes of LNG per year from its proposed Pluto gas field.

Set to expire in March 2009, Kansai’s original contract with the NWSV was signed in 1985.

The six equal participants in the NWSV are Woodside Energy (operator); BHP Billiton (North West Shelf); BP Developments Australia; Chevron Australia; Japan Australia LNG (MIMI); and Shell Development (Australia).
