The Force’s backs fumbled while their forwards were soft. The Highlanders come from the chilly south of New Zealand but they coped with the hot conditions and gritted out an 8-7 win.
Fortunately, the other Australian teams were victorious, with two of them posting away wins. The ACT Brumbies beat the Chiefs in Hamilton, New Zealand, while the NSW Waratahs showed attitude at altitude and defeated the Lions in Johannesburg. Back in Australia, the Queensland Reds took the wind out of the Hurricanes.
This weekend, the only Investec Super 14 game being played in Australia is in the ACT.
The Force travels to Cape Town to play the Stormers. Both teams are coming off losses and will be aiming to recover some pride. Also in South Africa, the Waratahs descend from the high veldt to sea-level to take on the Sharks at Durban’s intimidating Absa Stadium, a much tougher proposition than the weak Lions team they played last weekend.
Meanwhile, the Reds will cross the Tasman to play the world’s best provincial rugby team, the Crusaders, in Christchurch. The Reds are on a roll and the Crusaders lost last weekend in Auckland to the Blues, but even an undermanned Crusaders team is a threat, especially at home.
However, the big game will be on Saturday night in Canberra when the Brumbies will take on the Blues from Auckland. Both teams are coming off wins and are keen to play exciting rugby. This looks likely to be the Investec Super 14 match of the round.
If you live in or near the ACT, the Super 14’s Australian sponsor, specialist banking group Investec, is offering you the chance to win tickets to the Brumbies-Blues match.
