Critical control for Canadian crude

CANADIAN Natural Resources (CNR) has awarded Invensys a safety and critical control contract for the first phase of its Horizon Oil Sands Project in the Athabasca oil sands region in Canada. Invensys will supply its Triconex triple modular redundant architecture at the site.

Critical control for Canadian crude

The $C6.8 billion ($A7.3 billion) Horizon Oil Sands Project is a large grassroots mining, bitumen extraction and upgrading facility for the production of synthetic crude oil (SCO).

Invensys' Triconex safety and critical control systems will be implemented for all emergency shutdown, boiler management and fire and gas system applications.

The Horizon Project is designed as a phased development, incorporating open pit mining of bitumen, combined with an on-site upgrader.

Phase 1 is scheduled to start production in the second half of 2008 at 110,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd)of light, sweet synthetic crude. Phase 2 is expected to increase production to 155,000 bopd by 2010. Phase 3 should further increase production to 232,000 bopd by 2012.

To meet the safety and control requirements for Phase 1, Invensys will supply 38 of its latest-generation Tricon V10 TMR triple modular redundant (TMR) control systems.

The Triconex safety and critical control systems will be used to protect processes and business units at the project's bitumen extraction and upgrading facilities, as well as in the cogeneration plant and several remote facilities.

In addition to Tricon safety and control systems, the Invensys direct purchasing agreement with CNR includes Triconex training, integration and installation services.
