Avei was also fined 1500 kina ($US509) after being found guilty on two counts for failing to pay his rental fees to the National Housing Corporation, reported the National newspaper.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Timothy Hinchliffe and senior magistrate members Steven Abisae and Mark Pupaka, on April 4 found Avei guilty of five out of nine allegations of misconduct in office last month.

These included the failure to ensure that K250,000 in District Support Grants allocated for his electorate in 2002 for rural infrastructure projects was properly applied, failure to properly acquit those monies and failure to pay rentals under a tenancy agreement that he had entered in 1995 with the National Housing Corporation.

However, Avei will continue to contest in the upcoming elections in PNG after the Electoral Commission decided that the pending review meant that his nomination would not be scrapped and his name would remain on the Kairuku/Hiri ballot.
