The prime minister has refused to rule out a gas tax on new contracts in next month's budget, but says existing contracts definitely will not be affected.
Speaking at a Chamber of Minerals and Energy Western Australia business breakfast in Perth, Anthony Albanese was emphatic.
"I can confirm that the budget will not undermine existing contracts on gas exports," he told the audience, which included many politicians and industry leaders.
Later when speaking to reporters, he remained resolute and yet also evasive on whether there could be new taxes coming for new contracts.
But whatever the PM says, the ongoing debate around the notion of imposing a new gas windfall tax or reforming the existing PRRT doesn't look to be going away anytime soon.
And so we want to assess what our readers think of the proposals.
