Exmouth Power gets green light

The Western Australian town of Exmouth will be serviced by a new 8MW power station from 2005/2006 with Burns and Roe Worley (BRW) expected to start construction later this year following the finalisation of Native Title issues.

Exmouth Power gets green light

The project is a joint venture between BRW’s subsidiary Exmouth Power Station Pty Ltd and Western Power who signed an 18-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in September.

As part of the contract BRW will build the new gas-fired power station to supply Western Power’s electricity requirements in Exmouth, along with a gas compressor station near the Dampier to Bunbury Gas Pipeline.

Off site construction is to begin in the third quarter of 2004 and on site construction to commence in the second quarter of 2005.

Although the agreement calls for 8 MW (megawatts) of generation, made up of seven 1 MW gas-engine generators and a standby 1 MW diesel-engine generator, the companies expect to increase the generating capacity to 11 or 12 MW over the 18-year contract.
