Serpa is said to be one of the sunniest areas in Europe and Portuguese renewable energy company Catavento said the new plant, expected to be completed by 2007, should be the starting point for a much larger solar energy program.
The 11MW solar plant will consist of more than 50,000 photovoltaic modules, expected to produce enough electricity for up to 8000 homes and resulting in the avoidance of 30,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to typical fossil fuel power generation.
Catavento's partners in the project are Californian solar systems manufacturer PowerLight Corporation and GE, which is participating in the project as part of its 'ecomagination' initiative.
