THE news on Friday was pretty good for Santos. Shale production, profit beating analysts' expectations by a healthy margin, but the more interesting tale was one that has been a long time coming.

Giving its half-yearly guidance on Friday, Santos said it had been selling its gas at an average of $5.01 per gigajoule, a 14% jump on prices from a year earlier.
