According to Mohammad Souri, the chief of the National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC), "[South Pars] gas field will be producing 20 million tonnes of LNG per year by 2008 [and], given the fact that India requires 7 million tonnes of LNG per year, Iran is well placed to become a prime supplier."
"[We are] now ready to export LNG from Iran's South Pars Gas Field to any country," added Souri, who reiterated that, while LNG supply to India could be delivered by tankers, there was still a need for the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) pipeline.
"Taking into account India's desperate need for gas, both options are required," said Souri.
India has been reluctant to be part of the IPI project as it fears that Pakistan could sabotage the pipeline.
